NYEPI “THE DAY OF SILENCE”A UNIQUE BALINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION NYEPI “The day of silence” a unique Balinese new year celebration.The Balineze welcome their new yeaaar in seclusion. Nyepi is the Balinese new year, one of the most important and unusual of Bali’s many festive days occurring on the spring solstice. Tremendous offering are made on the last day of the old Hindu year throughout the island to Gods. Ancestors and all the evil spirits which are believed to lurk about in the shadows. On Nyepi day no one is allowed on the roads and the Balinese people have to stay at home refraining from making any loud noise. All is silent for 24 hours. This is the day of fasting and self introspection and the entire island is supposed to appear deserted. Guests will not be allowed to arrive and depart the island during this entire observance day, as the roads and airport will be closed there will be no transportation available to/from the airport. Please be informed that on March 23^rd, 2011 there will be a celebration of Absolute Quiet Day or Icaka New Year 1934 in Bali. In regard with this celebration, it is strictly prohibited to conduct the following activities:l No light may be litl No work may be donel No travel may be carried out and,l No amusement may be made This holiday celebration will start from 06.00 am on march 23^rd until 06.00 am on March 24^th, 2011. The flight operation of Ngurah Rai Airport on that day can be explained as below.a) Domestic and International Flights1. Flights with last destination and first departure from Ngurah Rai airport will not be on operation.2. Embarkation will be allowed for transit flights only, and no Embarkation is allowed for passengers with last destination to Denpasar or depart from Denpasar.b) Over fly, technical landing, and Emergency landing (Including medical evacuation).1. During the holiday celebration, it will only be allowed for Over fly, Technical landing and Emergency landing (Including Medical Evacuation).2. Technical landing, aircraft’s crews and passengers in particular are obliged to stay at the airport territory during the celebration (24 hours) c) For Tour operators in particular, who are promoting their tour – packages, could explain the meaning and the function of “ Icaka New Year 1934’ to foreigners in order to avoid misleading information about the basic philosophy of the holiday celebration itself. All entry to Bali via sea-ports will be closed during the celebration.

“Mekiyis or Melasti” ceremony, the procession of Hindu followers carrying temple effigies to the beach for purification ceremony in welcoming of “Nyepi” the Icaka New Year.- Sanur and Kuta beach.

March 22^nd, 2011

“Tawur Agung Kesanga Ceremony” is a great sacrificial ceremony offered to the underworld spirits for not disturbing human being’s settlement (at 12.00 noon) followed by procession of ogoh-ogoh, huge doll symbolizing evil spirits in the evening.- Puputan square, down town Denpasar city- Square or cross road of town and village throughout Bali. March 23^rd, 2011“Nyepi” holiday, the Icaka New Year 1934, the day of absolute silence for Hindu followers, when no activity is done, no fire is lit, no traveling anywhere and no amusement is held for the day and night.- Throughout Bali March 24^th, 2011“Med-medan” traditional event, this event is held in connection with “Nyepi” the Icaka New Year involving maidens and bachelors of the village as to strengthen brotherhood and understanding among the youth. Initiated with prayer at the local temple, the group members then hug one another, getting thoroughly wet under water sprouted by someone. It is indeed a cheerful moment for all, held about at 15.00 hours.- Banjar Kaja, Sesetan village, South of Denpasar.
